The Coeur d’Alene Mining district runs along the South Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River and contains some of the worlds largest deposits of silver. The area has produced 1.18 billion ounces of silver since 1884. It has also produced vast amounts of lead, zinc, copper, and antimony.
It is home to the Bunker Hill Superfund Site as heavy metal contamination became rampant throughout the area. Today, vast quantities of mining and milling tailings have settled on the bottom of Lake Coeur d’Alene, the receptacle of the river that flows through the mining district. |
