San Diego’s wastewater treatment plant on the city’s Point Loma peninsula sits on a bluff above the Pacific. Some 175 million gallons of sewage daily from 2.2 million residents is pumped to the facility for treatment before being discharged through a 4.5 mile-outfall into the ocean. The plant opened in 1962 and was expanded between 2002 and 2005. The plant touts its efficiency, boasting that it can treat one gallon of sewage for 1/3000th of a penny.
